Our Fight
In hindsight every great injustice of the past has been exposed as a great injustice. No one today would defend race-based slavery, promote the eugenics movement, or justify the Holocaust. But, in those days, whether by ignorance, prejudice, or the media’s manipulation, in the face of those injustices the majority of people chose to either participate or to simply stand aside.
And it is easy to read history books and blame our forefathers. We can blame Eighteenth Century Americans for failing to grant the Negro his humanity, for supporting the kidnapping and subsequent oppression of an entire people. We can blame the German Christians for failing to act against the Nazi’s exile and extermination of the Jews. But pointing fingers into the past will never get us anywhere. Hindsight, however clear, can never change the world.
But we can. Every generation has to fight against its own injustices. It is not ours to end race-based slavery, it is not ours to stand up against the Nazis, but it is ours to fight form of modern slavery. Injustice has not disappeared from the world; it’s just a little harder to see when you are in the middle of it.
That’s why we created Abolition Media. The problem is that everyone knows about the injustices of history but no one knows about the problems of today.
Would it surprise you if I told you that there are more slaves today than ever before in human history?
You thought slavery was over, didn’t you?
We did too, once. But after we were awakened to the severity of modern slavery and human trafficking issues today, our hearts were broken to action. We had already decided that we wanted to use our platform as musicians for a nobler end than simply fame and fortune, so our unanimous decision to act in the face of this injustice was the only logical next step. If we were already writing music about love, justice, truth, worth, and meaning, it just made sense that our art should be accompanied with action.
So we are doing what we love to make a difference in the world. Our nonprofit organization was created to better equip ourselves and other like-minded modern day abolitionists to use our platform as artists to raise awareness and funds which will fight against modern slavery, slave trade and human trafficking in our own city and across the world. We here at abolition media believe that this will be the fight of our generation, that this will be that for which we are known.
The enemy’s greatest strength is our ignorance and apathy, so we are passionate about getting the word out. People need to know the truth. And the truth will set us – and many others – free.
That’s what we’re about. Phil Yancey, Tim Brecht, Josh Lynn, and myself, Ezra Hagberg, are creating a community of artists and musicians to raise awareness about modern slavery. And we need you to join the movement too. Get informed. Check the links. Read our materials. Ask about partnering with us or playing a show. Donate. Join Abolition Media and join the fight against the greatest injustice in the world today.
Forever For the Cause,
Ezra Lawrence Hagberg
